I'm going to do a talk at Barcamp Ireland - SouthEast about using Eclipse (the free development environment) for languages other than Java. I use Eclipse all the time for Python development and it has support for Perl, Ruby on Rails, PHP, C/C++, etc.

Eclipse started out life a a free IDE from IBM but is now a pretty huge associated industry. I started using soon after it came out as a Java IDE. Its refactoring support made me move from XEmacs. Its support for source control systems makes it worth the effort with any language. It is not the easiest environment to start working with and this can put people off. I hope I can convince some people of the merits of this great free platform.

UPDATE: I posted some slides for Eclipse for Java and other languages.
